During our 15 years experience we have recognized that 2 elements are critical to realizing significant and sustainable improvements :
Significant Improvements
The broader the functional scope of an improvement, the bigger the benefits can be. However, the complexity of the change process also increases substantially. In order to start such an improvement project, an organization should be committed to structural change. This commitment can be triggered by financial pain but also by external pressure from customers or competitors. If there is no pressure for change, the improvement ambitions should be more modest and limited to individual parts of the organization.
Only if both ambition level and commitment are high, similar rewards can be expected.
If commitment of an organization is there, it should be anchored by proper project organization & management.
Sustainable Improvements
Consultants can help in structuring and speeding up the improvement process. Their focus will enable the realization of some quick and probably some substantial wins. In order to create structural improvements however, clients' employees and management have to be actively involved in the change process. This means that the amount of external help should be limited. It also implies that consultants should have the right experience and attitude, enabling them to help change behavior from board level to shop floor.
